The Chicago White Sox will be sponsoring the No. 77 Chevrolet Camaro driven by Ty Dillon for Spire Motorsports when NASCAR hits the streets of downtown Chicago on July 2nd.
The paint scheme and Ty Dillon’s firesuit will feature White Sox branding. Having a cup car representing the South Siders in the Grant Park 220 is a big deal. This is the first time in NASCAR’s 75-year history they have ever raced on a street course.
The pairing with Ty Dillion is a perfect fit for the White Sox organization, given their recent lack of success. Dillion is currently 33rd in the points standings and has yet to post a top-five or top-ten finish this season. He drives for a team in Spire Motorsports that does not have a big budget to compete with some of the bigger teams like Hendrick Motorsports or Joe Gibbs Racing.
Before the Enjoy Illinois 300, that took place just outside St. Louis on June 4th, Dillion said his goal was to make no mistakes and try to earn a top-15 finish. For a team like Spire Motorsports that is usually the goal. That is the equivalent of an MLB team saying their goal is to stay healthy and finish in the middle of the standings. Sound familiar?
Dillion’s best career finish came in October of 2020 when he finished third at Talladega. The 31-year-olds best season came in 2019 when he scored one top-five finish and a career-best three top-ten finishes. Spire Motorsports picked up Dillion after he lost his ride with Petty GMS in the No. 42 car.
Taking fliers on players who have been released by their previous organization is a White Sox specialty.
Dillion is a very likable guy. But he also has a brother who has won the Daytona 500 and gets a lot more attention in the NASCAR community than him smiliar to how the Cubs garner more attention than the White Siox in Chicago.
This season Dillon is on an underdog team that has made some improvements from years past. However, he consistently gets outrun by his teammate Corey Lajoie who is ten spots ahead of him in the standings despite driving similar cars.
Dillon’s White Sox themed car will be displayed at Guaranteed Rate Field on NASCAR Night on July 23rd.
“This partnership with Spire Motorsports is truly a unique opportunity to showcase the White Sox brand during one of the most talked about events in Chicago,” said Mike Downey, White Sox director of marketing and promotions.
“The NASCAR Chicago Street Race is certain to be an event for the record books, and we’re grateful to team up with Spire Motorsports and Beggars Pizza to be part of what is sure to be a memorable event for all.”
If you want to see this White Sox-themed car in action, you are probably going to have to go to the race. They don’t show the back of the pack much on television.
