Listen, Willson Contreras talked shit about the Chicago Cubs every chance he got this offseason after signing with the St. Louis Cardinals and ever since he said bye, Cubs fans have also gotten some ricochet shots from the former all-star catcher. Monday night was his first game back at Wrigley Field in a Cardinals uniform and he knew that he would get a split reaction from fans.
Here’s what Contreras said before the series opener.
Just a bit of a walk back from some comments that really did get some Cubs fans deep in their feelings this past winter. I mean, it probably started with Contreras talking about how he dreamed of wearing a Cardinals uniform since last season and how he wanted to take over for Yadier Molina.
But, at least for me, Willson has just been a dude who had his heart broken by the Cubs, who for years made it clear that they weren’t going to make him their catcher of the future. If anything, this turned out great for everyone. The Cubs moved on and have a solid foundation at catcher and Miguel Amaya on the verge of being the long term answer, while Contreras got paid, and then has been a part of the destruction of the St. Louis Cardinals pitching staff.
So, what did Contreras expect from Cubs fans?
Well, it sure did sound like a 50/50 split reaction to me. Listen for yourself.
And of course he wasn’t going to back down from the boos. Contreras singled up the middle against Marcus Stroman and goaded the Cubs fans who booed after reaching first base.
This is exactly who Willson Contreras was with the Cubs and who he has been with the Cardinals. Love him your team, hate him, and especially more when he’s on your biggest rival.
It would have been way more positive had he not trashed the Cubs in his comments when he was introduced to the STL press as a Cardinal.
We have to love Contreras and all of the 2016 Cubbies. Let’s not forget that he wanted to remain a Cub so badly that he shed tears. It’s only natural that he was upset not remaining a Cub. He’s not discontent with the fan base; but the decision makers who refused to sign him. Good luck Contreras and We love you, Man!
