We now have a clear idea of who GM Ryan Poles prefers if the Chicago Bears stay put at #9 overall. The belief among several experts is defensive tackle Jalen Carter would be the only prospect he would stay put for. If Carter is off the board, then it’s widely expected the Bears will try to move down. Poles wants to keep stockpiling draft capital and take advantage of a class that has good depth. The lingering question is, if the Bears do move down, who would their target be? We may have an answer.
A new rumor surfaced that many in the organization really like Georgia left tackle Broderick Jones. They see him as a stronger version of Braxton Jones with an elite athletic upside. He still has plenty of technical flaws to iron out, but the guy has proved himself against the best competition in the country for two years, winning two national titles in the process.
Most experts project Jones going somewhere in the 13-17 range of the 1st round. That would explain why the Bears feel they can get him if they chose to move down first.

Jones fits that exact profile. He dominated the competition at the scouting combine, showcasing his athleticism with the fastest 40 time (4.97). He’s 6’5, 311 lbs, and has arms over 34 inches long. Jones checks every conceivable box of an NFL left tackle. It boils down to whether the Bears trust offensive line coach Chris Morgan can fix his technical issues.

Georgia has produced a steady stream of good players on the offensive line in recent years. Ben Jones, Cordy Glenn, Isaiah Wynn, Andrew Thomas, and Jamaree Salyer are some examples. Broderick Jones has a chance to be the best of the bunch. He has that much potential. Players with his size and athleticism combination are rare. The Chicago Bears seem willing to bet on those traits, even though many feel he still has some growing to do.

I agree with Carlitopen. We need as close to a sure thing as possible. Doesn’t matter if it’s at nine, seventeen or twenty-five. The back from Texas, Wright, Skoranski, or maybe JSN. Every prospect is a gamble but these guys are the only ones in the first round I’d be comfortable with. That includes all the quarterbacks.
This guy Jones could be the best of the bunch. But you would have to have a very good idea of how dedicated he is and if he really wants it. There’s safer picks and Braxton should be our left tackle unless we get Johnson. The thing about this situation is this. This is Poles first first round draft pick and he should take the most consistent and steady player. I’d be fine with this IF moving down got the Bears a higher 2nd round draft pick in this year’s draft than what they currently have, but I’d use it to draft Darnell Wright. Why not take the very best RT available (Wright) and let Braxton continue to develop his skills at LT? If you take Broderick, you essentially have to go through the growing pains of him developing his skills as a rookie at LT, AND you have to recognize that Braxton will also have growing pains moving to the right side of the line.
