Bears’ Hunt For Justin Fields Protection Expanded Again

-

One thing about the Chicago Bears’ approach to the pre-draft process is how active they’ve been on the offensive linemen. It’s no joke. They have met with several in recent weeks all across the country, ranging from possible 1st round picks to likely undrafted free agents. The message is clear enough. GM Ryan Poles is determined to bolster Justin Fields’ protection. He already started the process by signing veteran guard Nate Davis. The next step is finding potential help at offensive tackle and center.

It appears the Bears are unsurprisingly looking into the recent prospects from Wisconsin. No program has been more consistent at producing quality blocking in the NFL than the Badgers. Joe Thomas, Ryan Ramczyk, Tyler Biadasz, and Travis Frederick are just some of the names to come from there since 2000. Now the Bears seem to be scouting two of their number closely. One is top center prospect Joe Tippmann and the other is guard Tyler Beach. Both fit Chicago’s profile of being big, strong, and athletic.

Justin Fields would love a guy like Beach.

The Bears seek enforcers to defend their quarterback and set the tone with their play. The Wisconsin guard fits that mold. He plays with a nasty disposition, especially in the run game. He has the versatility to play both guard and tackle. His athletic profile also makes him an excellent fit for a zone-blocking scheme. Tippmann is much the same. Both would fit exactly what the Bears are looking for. It comes down to where they go. Tippmann is projected to go in the 2nd round. Beach is likely a Day 3 option.

Chicago hasn’t had much luck drafting players from Wisconsin. Their last one, Gabe Carimi, suffered a career-altering knee injury in only his second game. However, the surprising ascent of Jack Sanborn at linebacker might offer optimism that their fortunes are changing. Tippmann or Beach would be intriguing additions to the offensive line. Justin Fields would undoubtedly be happy. The more protection he gets, the better his odds of getting even better in 2023 and beyond.

Mr. Poles, perhaps “the masses are asses,” so “let them eat cake” three times a day. This can be done by convincing them, Fields, and perhaps yourself that Bijan will be the best or most talented player available at #9 or later. Think of it this way: why be satisfied with a good committee of Sly Stone, Ginger Baker, and Eric Clapton, when you can have a Jimi Hendrix Experience?

Bears need OL. We all know this. Tippmann (UW-Madison) is probably the number 2 center after JMS (Minnesota), on the ‘consensus’ board, which is sort of the average of everyone’s board. Then there’s Avila (TCU), Wypier (the Ohio State U), Oluwatimi (Michigan), Patterson (Notre Dame), Forsyth (Oregon), Scruggs (Penn St.), Stromberg (Arkansas), and others. One may argue about the exact order, but that’s not critical. The question for Poles is where do each of these fall on the Bears board. Wypler has the fastest 40 time from the list above, at 5.14, but that’s not the most critical drill for… Read more »

Mr. Poles, you know the Bears have needed to upgrade the OL for several years and failed embarrassingly to do so. Protection, protection, protection, in the trench of course! And it can be had in this single draft. But consider a more expansive conception of security for Fields. RB Bijan, beyond any blocking ability, would provide such a threatening dynamic, so that defenses would not be able to fully focus on and brazenly challenge Fields play after play; thus providing more time to throw and allow WRs/TEs to get open. He also would not have to run as much, thereby… Read more »
