The Chicago Bears seem to have their quarterback situation figured out. Justin Fields remains the starter. GM Ryan Poles has already begun stacking the offense around him with more help. P.J. Walker replaces Trevor Siemian as the backup. The addition makes sense. Walker is a downsized version of Fields. He has the mobility needed to function in this offense and has starting experience. However, somebody thinks the Bears can do much better than the former XFL star. That is Cam Newton.
The former league MVP finds himself without a team for the first time in his career. His steady decline over the past few years was impossible to ignore. While still a significant threat on the ground, his ability to throw the ball has vanished. His trademark velocity is gone and the accuracy suffered as well. Even so, the 33-year-old has maintained the steadfast belief there aren’t 32 quarterbacks in the NFL better than him. That said, he stated on his YouTube channel that he is open to being a backup. He even had a list of QBs he’d be willing to join. Number three on that list? Yep, Justin Fields.
Cam Newton has done his homework.
His goal is to not only get hired but go to a team that offers a good scheme fit for him. With his ability as a passer diminished, he needs to land on a team that runs the football and can take advantage of his mobility. Having watched Fields rush for over 1100 yards last season, it’s only obvious Chicago would be high on his list of teams. Despite the apparent decline, he still had five rushing touchdowns last season. He could be decent if the Bears were to keep the passing demands limited and lean on their ground attack.
Alas, don’t expect it to happen. Walker is younger and likely cheaper than Cam Newton would be. He’s also got a far better arm at this stage of his career. He can attack down the field. Newton can no longer do anything close to that. It’s sad. Everybody knew the numerous hits he took throughout his career in Carolina would take their toll. They finally did. Most quarterbacks can have a productive career well into their late 30s these days. Newton might be out of football this year and isn’t even 34 yet.

Ghost Tomahawk is a total fkn idiot. You must not watch the games for some one who claims to be interested in the Bears. Your ridiculous observations of how Justin Fields plays is neither informed or accurate. Every person on the PLANET who looked at the Bears Roster last year KNEW there was no talent other then Fields and Maybe Cole Kemet. Mooney, as good as he is, cannot be your only WR that can catch and get open and expect that WHOEVER is at QB is going to put up eye popping passing stats. It was not a case… Read more »
HELL NO
Effectively, the Bears only have two QBs right now. If Poles thinks it’s worthwhile taking a later-round flier on a QB, that’s fine. If not – AND – he’d be cheap enough (unlikely) – AND – willing to be our third-option QB (again, unlikely because he knows some team will get a starting QB injury and sign him if only as insurance), then o.k.
Trevor Lawrence sucked his first year under Urban Meyer, ummmmm… do you think it was Lawrence’s fault? NO….. Trevor improved dramatically last year with a good head coach and better players around him.
Justin will do the same, don’t know what film Tomahawk is watching, maybe Cam Newton, but Fields is tough as nails, mobile and can throw the pigskin on a dime… Ask yourself this question, Would you start a team with Trevor as your QB? I would…Trust me after this season you will be GLAD that Justin Fields is the QB of the CHICAGO BEARS. BEAR DOWN….
The only comment I agreed with from Ghost Tomahawk 34, is that Newtons career is over, the Bears done well with P.J Walker as a backup, he has his RB and his WR from Carolina and plays a lot like Justin Fields. Good Job, Ryan. Can’t wait to see what you have in store for the Draft. It can’t get here soon enough for me.
