Luke Getsy Revealed How Bad The Bears’ O-Line Issue Is Getting

-

The Chicago Bears knew stability would be crucial for a functional offensive line in 2022. Sadly, they weren’t able to get one. Injuries have ravaged the unit throughout the season. Lucas Patrick went down for the year with a toe problem. Larry Borom and Riley Reiff have both dealt with nagging injuries in recent weeks. As if that weren’t bad enough, now both starting guards Cody Whitehair (knee) and Teven Jenkins (neck) look likely to miss Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy put things in perspective during his Wednesday press conference.

The Bears are so shorthanded right now that they’ve been experimenting with moving guys around the line. That includes shifting all of their tackles inside to see how they look. Borom, Reiff, and Alex Leatherwood have all taken reps at guard. It isn’t a surprise the Bears are taking this approach. Buffalo’s defensive front is one of the best in the NFL. Justin Fields was sacked six times last week against Philadelphia. Protecting him remains a top priority. That means finding the best five-man combination possible, even if it means getting creative.

Luke Getsy must hope the chosen formula works.

People criticize him for some of his situational play calling lately. The truth is most of it stems from his lack of trust in the offensive line. He knows they aren’t equipped to pass protect one on one. That means he either has to run the ball a lot or give them extra help with tight ends and running back chips. It isn’t easy to score points that way. Fields makes it easier with his insane athletic ability. The imminent return of running back Khalil Herbert will also be a nice boost. Still, it is clearer than ever how much help the offensive line needs going into 2023.

GM Ryan Poles will have over $100 million in cap space and multiple high draft choices. He should be able to land at least two new starters that can solidify the line. If Jenkins returns healthy and Braxton Jones takes the next step, this front could be much better next year. If so, everything else becomes easier. The only thing fans can do is hope Fields survives this Sunday. Everything points to it being a tough day for the young quarterback.

I like the idea of moving men we have inside to Guard to evaluate them.

This game will actually be played on Saturday. We will see how many of the Bears will be added to the injured list on Sunday.

If JF is getting sack, early and often…. put Peterman, in. He’s getting paid… he’s not our ‘future’… so let him be the tackling dummy. That sounds COLD hearted but… JF is a FRANCHISE hope for the future. at this point the live long bear fans are hoping to secure the #2 overall pick. (on a related note, Titan’s Tannehill is out, so… there IS a chance that Texan’s get a 2nd win…. then 1 more and we get #1 overall. That would be worth A TON in trading back scenario… we could actually be playoff relevant in ’23 (vs… Read more »
