Darius Slay Doubles Down, Calling Justin Fields “Magnificent”

-

Darius Slay is happy he doesn’t play in Detroit anymore. Part of that is because it was a losing organization for most of his career. However, he has a new reason for this feeling. It means he doesn’t have to play Justin Fields twice a year. The Pro Bowl cornerback doesn’t envy his former team after getting a taste of playing the Chicago Bears quarterback on Sunday. He came away very impressed, describing Fields as a “highlight reel” and complimenting his toughness for taking six sacks and still getting up.

Having taken a couple of days to watch the film and reflect, it appears Slay is even more impressed now than he was before. He went more in-depth on his thoughts for his YouTube segment on The Volume. The cornerback was even more effusive in his praise than before. He’s convinced that Chicago has one of the best young talents at the position in the NFL. A bigger, faster Jalen Hurts. If given a proper supporting cast, the Bears will be a team nobody wants to play in the near future.

Darius Slay isn’t afraid to speak his mind on quarterbacks.

He was famously critical of Mitch Trubisky in 2017, accusing the Bears rookie of having a bad tendency to stare down his receivers. That statement seemed to haunt Trubisky throughout his career, as he never really overcame the problem. So when somebody like Slay has so many good things to say about Fields, it is noteworthy. He already likes watching the Bears quarterback play. It will be even more fun once the team gets better pieces around him in the coming months.

Philadelphia has even provided a template for Chicago to follow. They learned how to build around Hurts, who is similar in skillset to Fields. Give him a physical offensive line and two highly-talented wide receivers like DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown. Now the Eagles are the highest-scoring team in football and a favorite to reach the Super Bowl. Darius Slay saw what they were building. It’s why he was happy to join the organization. That could happen for the Bears as the whispers of Fields’ ascent continue spreading.

Fields largely relied upon his arm, not his legs, throughout his college career. Hopefully, the Bears can get him decent line protection an(d a stud No. 1 receiver) in the draft and/or via free agency. Otherwise, our franchise quarterback could end up getting seriously hurt if he’s got to run all the time.

Yeah, Darius Slay has also had high praise for Jordan Love “looked like ARod” and Mitch Trubisky “he’s a great one.” Doesn’t mean he’s wrong about Fields, just maybe take things with a small grain of salt.
