Justin Fields was missed last week against the New York Jets. So it was hoped he might be able to inject some life into his Chicago Bears against the rival Green Bay Packers. Like any good quarterback would, he obliged. After a solid opening drive that resulted in a field goal, Fields decided to turn up the juice on the second. Facing 2nd and 11 from the 44-yard line, he conducted yet another ridiculous sequence that saw him going from sacked to a 56-yard run for a touchdown to put the Bears ahead 10-0.
It’s way too early to know if the Bears will win the game. Knowing Aaron Rodgers and how bad the defense has been, that seems unlikely. However, it doesn’t matter. This play was yet further validation that the franchise finally has somebody at quarterback they can build around. Yes, his passing productivity must get better. Everybody knows this. That said, his mobility is a game-changer. The Bears can make lethal use of it every week and defenses can’t seem to stop it no matter how well the game plan.
Justin Fields is doing this without much help.
That is what should terrify teams the most. If he is this dangerous with a supporting cast that can be called average at best, try to imagine what might happen when he gets a better offensive line and wide receivers that can get open with more consistency. No doubt the Bears are thinking the same things. They already invested a 2nd round pick in Chase Claypool last month. He won’t be the last investment they make. Tons of salary cap space, and a likely top 10 pick is coming their way as well.
There is a strong probability this team will be significantly more talented by next fall than it is right now. Justin Fields will also have more experience in this offensive system. If Luke Getsy stays for another year, it should be set up for significant improvement from everybody involved. The big key will be health. Fields has taken lots of hits this year. While nobody questions his toughness, the body can only take so much punishment. He and the team must continue working on finding ways to limit the shots he absorbs.
