People were ready to judge Justin Fields the moment Trevor Siemian had himself a strong afternoon in New York. Things started well. The veteran went for over 120 yards passing and a touchdown in the 1st quarter. However, the numbers were misleading. Half of the yardage came on two checkdowns to running backs. The touchdown should’ve been an interception if not for a great play by Byron Pringle. After the first 15 minutes, the Jets completely shut Siemian down for the rest of the afternoon. The offense mustered only 10 points after averaging 29 in the previous six weeks.
For Trent Dilfer, that put the final nail in the coffin of Fields critics. They could no longer argue that the young quarterback was the entire Bears’ offense. Everything ran through him. Only special players are capable of doing stuff like that. The former Pro Bowler stated this on 670 The Score. Fields hasn’t only been productive; he’s also been effective in critical situations. His ability on 3rd down and in the red zone isn’t appreciated enough. Maybe now people understand what he means to this team.
Justin Fields is that guy who can carry a team.
That is the popular saying among football fans. There are two categories of quarterbacks. Those that you win with. These quarterbacks are serviceable, managing games well but aren’t going to do much outside of the offensive structure. Such types need a strong support cast to have success. Then there are quarterbacks you win because of. These rare types have enough talent to elevate everybody around them to play better than they usually would. Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, and Lamar Jackson are such types. The fact Fields was scoring almost 30 points per game without a single Pro Bowler on his side of the ball says everything.
That is why Bears fans should be excited. If Ryan Poles can retool the offense with legitimate blue-chip talents on the offensive line and wide receiver, Justin Fields has a chance to enter elite status. This is uncharted territory for this organization. They haven’t had a quarterback like this in ages. Maybe ever. Jay Cutler had so much talent, but something always seemed off with him. He was too reckless with the ball and didn’t have the greatest reputation as a leader. Fields feels different. That is why it’s exciting times.

He can’t throw or read a defense but hes good at running. We all know primarily running QBs last a long time in the NFL (huge eye roll)
Granted Mooney was in most of the game and broke a 44 game streak with a reception and QB have an easier time putting up empty numbers when playing from behind because they pass more and the Jets were in prevent defense the entire 4th quarter so those 2 points work against you.
Fields may be special, but way to overreact, based upon one game. The backup QB played for the first time in 2 years, on the road in a driving rain, with an oblique injury, without the Bears no. 1 receiver. He also played from behind the entire game, because the Bears D was missing multiple starters, and couldn’t stop my grandma. So yeh, let’s claim the Jets game as proof the Fields is special.
