Luke Getsy had 11 days to assess where his Chicago Bears offense was at after a frustrating loss to the Washington Commanders. The young coordinator could’ve stayed the course, hoping his players would eventually figure things out. Instead, the 37-year-old did something that wasn’t easy. He changed. Together with his staff, Getsy implemented several adjustments to the scheme prior to visiting New England in hopes of getting his quarterback Justin Fields more comfortable.
The results were far above expectations. Chicago racked up almost 400 yards of total offense, scored 33 points, and got the best overall performance from Fields of the season. The fact that Getsy accomplished this against a Bill Belichick-coached defense makes it even more impressive. Peyton Manning already had praise for Getsy’s work during the broadcast. Now other former players have echoed the same. Brian Baldinger of NFL Network can see the logic of the new offense. Everything makes sense, and that is why it works.
.@ChicagoBears @justnfields like I say every week; even when the results aren’t favorable #DaBears have a coach & a QB. The formations, the motions, the designs make sense! The offense is being catered to the skills & that’s coaching #BaldysBreakdowns pic.twitter.com/XamE3k4aD0

He wasn’t alone. Another former quarterback in J.T. O’Sullivan reviewed the tape. Every play call over the course of the game seemed to be the right one. The running game dominated, and life was much easier for Fields.

Luke Getsy seems to be growing too.
It is easy to forget he is a first-time coordinator. There can often be an adjustment period when that is the case. Coaches need time to learn, just like players. It has become clear Getsy has a firm understanding of his personnel. He does a great job of playing to their strengths. In this case, it is running the football. The trio of David Montgomery, Khalil Herbert, and Fields has given defenses fits since the season began. Instead of fighting that reality as Matt Nagy did, Getsy chose to embrace it.
Now the Bears have an identity. They’re executing better. Confidence is growing. At the same time, Luke Getsy is learning how to be a better play caller. He understands situations and how to take advantage of defenses. It is becoming easier to see why players call him a “genius.” The fact he’s getting this much out of a roster most experts agree is below average says a lot. This could be a fun ride if the Bears can keep him around long enough.
Dave, you’re right. We have been calling for this since training camp and they said this would be the offense this year. Not sure why it took so long but with so many new and moving parts it just did. But IT’S HERE! LET’S GO BEARS! ALL THE WAY TO DESTROYING ROGERS, THE PLAYOFFS, AND BEYOND!!!
30? No.
It seems crazy to me that when the coach finally does what many of us on the internet have been screaming for him to do since Week 1, and it works, why are many of us now seem smarter than the coach? The O Line was bad so the only way to really help was to call more running plays, move the pocket, roll out etc but it takes 6 weeks to implement change. The WRs had a hard time getting open, so it took 6 weeks to scheme them open by running pick plays etc. One thing I can… Read more »
What are we at, 22 pass attempts per game average? Have we hit 30 once?
I’m still hoping the Run vs Pass starts to get to pass first. Don’t want RG3 or Simms happening with Fields. But, can’t argue with results of that game plan. D is incredible this year to start, even without a hard core front 4.
