Dick Butkus Hijacked The Bears Twitter Account And It Was Magnificent

-

The Chicago Bears Twitter account isn’t known for doing anything too crazy. It does, however, have a history of being hacked. Everybody remembers the infamous Saudi prince incident a few years ago. So when a completely random tweet surfaced late Tuesday evening, people immediately felt it had happened again. Then the true culprit of the sudden hijacking was revealed. It was none other than legendary linebacker himself, Dick Butkus.

If you ever wanted an idea of what it was like to see your grandpa handle Twitter and that grandpa is also one of the toughest football players ever to live. Over the course of 12 tweets, he did a bunch of random things that were pure entertainment from start to finish. He took accidental pictures that were framed all wrong. He ran a couple of polls on what to do and then found head coach Matt Eberflus for a photo op. Then he told the story of his favorite football game he had ever played before casually stating he was done and heading off to TikTok.

Have a look for yourselves and bask in the magnificence.

Dick Butkus gave Bears fans much-needed levity.

The football season can often get overly serious for many people. Sometimes the best thing to do is relax and have a little fun. Butkus did that by doing something that most NFL teams would never allow. He basically took over the page and went nuts. What he lacked in creativity, he made up for in entertainment. Nobody can ever say the man is boring. One can only hope he gets more chances to do this in the future.

It would be interesting to hear his take on the current season. Dick Butkus has to see plenty of familiarity. Running the ball. Playing good defense. Bad quarterback play. That was pretty much his entire career in the 1960s and ’70s. Probably not as fun to watch now. Then again, it never was.

Tom Croce – very nice story. To me, Dick has always been the face of the Bears…and Walter, too. Kudos for your dad encouraging you to talk to Mr. Butkus. Frankly, it was emotional for me just reading it. I’m a year younger than Dick., and attended my first game at Wrigley in 1954.

I was with my dad at an awards banquet in NYC the Waldorf in 1974 and Dick was a scheduled presenter. 17 years old and a high school football player in addition to being a huge Bears/Butkus fan, I remember it like yesterday. We arrived early and I spied 51 from across the darkened room speaking with two ladies seated at a table who wound up being his mom and wife. I nudged my dad “look dad, that’s Dick Butkus!” and my dad said “Go talk to him.” As luck would have it there was a late night Dick Cavett… Read more »
