Cassius Marsh Celebrates Retirement Of Ref That Screwed Bears

-

Fans can pick out several games in the 2021 season that were the pivot point. A moment where the Chicago Bears could’ve gone in either direction. Either on a major winning streak or fall apart. For many, that moment came in Pittsburgh against the Steelers. A game where the Bears had it in hand but thanks to circumstances often out of their control weren’t able to finish. No moment, or person in this case, exemplified the heartbreak more than Cassius Marsh.

Chicago had signed the veteran defensive end that week to help their defense through some key losses up front. The timing was rather poetic as the Steelers had cut Marsh earlier in the year. So it must’ve felt like a moment of vindication when he dropped Ben Roethlisberger for a sack that should’ve resulted in a Steelers punt. Instead, Marsh was flagged by referee Tony Corrente for taunting because he stared too long at the Pittsburgh sideline.

Nobody with half a brain bought it.

Either way, it was a costly penalty. The Steelers went on to score that drive and escaped with a 29-27 victory. Marsh himself was baffled after the game. Not only did he think the penalty was bogus, but he also felt Corrente was unprofessional when the ref seemed to hip-check him right before throwing the flag.

So it was rather interesting news when reports emerged that Corrente was electing to retire following the conclusion of the 2021 season. At 70-years old that would make plenty of sense. Then again one must wonder if the heat he drew for his questionable calls might’ve pushed him to step away. Regardless, Cassius Marsh didn’t hold back his own feelings on the subject.

It is hard to blame him. The veteran knows he should’ve had a signature moment in a pivotal win for the Bears. One that could’ve made him a bit of a folk hero. Sadly, the refs stole it from him over a ticky-tack call.
