One thing Chicago Bears fans have learned with Dazz Newsome is that he’s a character. From the moment he stepped in front of the cameras this was apparent. His love of food and absolute dismay at the state of Illinois not having a Waffle House was one of the highlights of the spring. There is no doubt he is a unique personality and that is why fans took to him so quickly. The same can be said for his teammates.
When asked about the 6th round rookie, a smile spread across the face of Bears receiver Darnell Mooney. It was obvious right away he had a love for the guy, describing him as hilarious. Not to mention a little quirky. He told the story that Newsome actually has his own little ritual before punt returns. Something that took place in the game against the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday.
Tremendous. Can’t say it doesn’t work either. Trailing 7-0 early in the game, the Bears needed a big play to give them a spark. Newsome obliged with a big 28-yard punt return. This set up their first touchdown of the afternoon.
It gets better though.
When he found out what Mooney told the media about his little ritual, Dazz Newsome became indignant. That is not how the cadence goes. It is in fact the opposite.

It’s the opposite way. To the crib on me . To the crib on 3. https://t.co/0Elvx6QDq5

Just 20 minutes later, Mooney fired back.
Lol well damn my bad, you changed it every time you went out . 😅 https://t.co/tdUW1MK3IF

If outsiders are wondering why Bears fans have quickly grown attached to these young men, it’s exchanges like this that help explain it. Not only are they talented individuals capable of making big plays on the field, but they’re also colorful characters. Newsome has his punt return ritual and his love of Waffle House. Mooney uses a jugs machine in his own hallway with a helmet on but no shirt.
Those sort of things serves as a reminder these guys are human beings beneath the uniforms. They have their own little quirks that make them different. Including ways to get psyched up and ready for a game. If doing that cadence is what it takes for Newsome to make plays, then nobody is going to complain.
The only suggestion is if somebody can get it on camera.
