The guy who purchased the ticket has new odds of 179-1, which is still much better than the 40-1 odds Loyola had coming into the tournament. If the Ramblers manage to be the first mid-major school to win the National Championship since 1977, this bettor will win an insane $90,000. Head coach Porter Moser has done an excellent job elevating a small insignificant school to national prominence over the last few years. The Ramblers made an improbable run to the Final Four in 2018, before coming up short of a title game appearance. Big man Cam Krutwig, who looks like he will be the perfect euro-league star player, has been impressive over his years with the Ramblers.
What’s Next?
The Ramblers will play the winner of the Oklahoma State – Oregon State matchup. As of this writing, a winner has not been decided yet in the game. Either way, the Ramblers will have another game where they will have to overcome an extreme talent disadvantage. If they can beat a team that was as talented as Illinois, then they have the ability to compete with any team in the country. Now, teams like Loyola almost never win championships or appear in championship games, so the odds are huge against them.
As mentioned previously, a small school like Loyola would have to overcome a MASSIVE talent disadvantage against a team like Gonzaga or Baylor. Illinois was clearly the more talented team in their matchup, and would win that game 80-85 times if they played 100, but things like this happen for some reasons that are really unexplainable. As stated previously, the Ramblers made another run in 2018, where they made it to the Final Four. After that impossible upset over Illinois, the bettor who bought this ticket must be feeling at least a little better about his chances of cashing in for a nice payday.
