Worst NFL Bad Beats Of 2020: Browns Botch Their Laterals And More

-

With the year 2020 at a close, it is the best time to look back at some of the best and worst moments of the previous year in NFL sports betting. While there was no shortage of amazing plays, great moments, and memorable highlights, there were also points where bettors wanted to rip their hair out. The pain, the heartbreak, the hurting these moments put on our wallets. Who wouldn’t want to hear about how much sadness bettors went through this past year?

There was no shortage of worthy candidates this past year of teams and players that cost us a fortune. We just tried to list off all the moments we felt like we got gipped the worst and this is what we came up with. So without further ado, enjoy and relish in our heartbreak (and possibly yours) from the insane year of 2020.

Browns Can’t Lateral – Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns (+3)

This game turned out to be one of the greatest sports events of the year and was the worst beat of the entire season in my opinion.

A come from behind effort from the Browns was sparked by a Lamar Jackson cramp in the fourth quarter, but Jackson would return and lead the Ravens to a victory in this critical AFC North battle.

The Ravens defending MVP came back into the game with two minutes remaining facing a fourth down, down by a point. He would then toss a go-ahead 44-yard TD on that very same play. With 1:51 remaining on the clock, the Browns drove the field and tied the game with just over a minute remaining.

Baltimore would respond with their own quick drive, culminating in a Justin Tucker field goal to go up by three. With 33 total points scored in the fourth quarter alone, Brown’s bettors would have taken a push. However, there were still two seconds left on the clock after the Tucker FG.

The Browns tried pitching a few laterals for a miracle score but ended up going back into their own endzone that led to a safety and a five-point Baltimore victory. I remember watching the ball go out of the back of the endzone, and then shouting in disgust at my TV screen. What an absolutely horrible way to lose after such a great game.

Nick Chubb Runs Out Of Bounds – Houston Texans at Cleveland Browns (-3.5)

It was a cold and stormy day in the city of Cleveland. Lightning ended up delaying this game, which rarely occurs, so we should have known that something absolutely stupid would happen here. Scoring was at a premium, but the Browns had control of the game for most of play. The line for this game was all over the place on the morning of the match, going from Cleveland -3 to eventually settle at -3.5. Browns backers were praying for a late score by the team to cover their bets.

On the final drive of the game, the Browns were trying to milk away some clock, and Browns bettors could only pray for a long run by RB Nick Chubb to cover their wagers. The Texans had used up all of their timeouts and all Cleveland needed was a first down to clinch the victory. On third down, the former Georgia Bulldog ripped off a huge run downfield with nobody within 10 yards of him. It seemed as though a miracle cover would happen, until it didn’t.

Chubb stepped out of bounds at the one-yard line, and Cleveland went into victory formation to get the victory by three.

Mr. Chubb didn’t have to go out of bounds, but for Texans +3.5 backers like myself, I sincerely thank him for doing so.

My Personal Favorite, My Hero, Anthony Lynn – Los Angeles Chargers (+4.5) at Buffalo Bills

Former Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn is that one in a billion coach that you only get once in a great while. His legendary status of always keeping games within one score tragically ended on this faithful day against the Bills. Not because he couldn’t make it happen, but because of one of his pattened bonehead calls late in a game to cost them chances at victory.

Despite having offensive rookie of the year Justin Herbert at QB and a very talented cast of players, the chargers trailed 24-6 in the second half but in classic Lynn fashion, they brought the game within a score. They trailed by 10 with a minute left and had a chance to cover their +4.5.

Looking at a 4th-and-27, Herbert bombed a 55-yarder down the field to receiver Tyler Johnson to the Bills’ 2-yard line. After 30 seconds ticked off the clock in some absolutely horrible clock management, Lynn made possibly the most atrocious call of his career. He decided to run the ball instead of throw, which was stuffed and the clock kept ticking down to zero.

Words cannot express how much I will miss betting on Anthony Lynn coached games next season, but with the legend himself now on the Detroit Lions, I’ll have to consider it. The Lions got rid of one of the stooges in Matt Patricia and brought in another. Incredible.

Thank you, Anthony.
