One of the most complete teams in football facing off against a team that is still alive in the playoff race makes tonight’s Thursday Night Football a must-watch.
The LA Rams and the New England Patriots will face off tonight, and PointsBet is offering lines that will keep you glued to your couch. Will the Rams inch closer to the NFC playoff bye? Will the Patriots be able to keep their playoff hopes alive?
TNF Odds Boost: Goff Throws 2+ TDs (-150)
Jared Goff is the most average QB in the NFL. He isn’t great, but he’s good enough to get you into the playoffs. So far this season, Goff has 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Again, he’s extremely average.
His QBR is ranked 24th in the league at 61.5, but he’s thrown for 3,372 yards. That being said, over half of those yards have been from yards after catch (YAC) because he has receivers like Cooper Kupp who can run like the wind.
According to ESPN Stats, the Patriots’ defense is above average. They give up 225.8 passing yards per game, tied for 12th best. Most importantly, the Pats defense is fourth-best in total passing TDs (16).
So do I like this bet? No, I don’t. The Patriots force a lot of turnovers, and Goff tends to play into that.
Rams Head Coach Sean McVay is going to dial up a lot of run looks against Bill Belichick’s defense. Safety Devin McCourty has two interceptions, and J.C. Jackson is tied for second in the league with seven. The Patriots’ pass defense is much better than their run defense.
Rams vs. Patriots Three Best Bets
Cam Newton Under 181.5 Passing Yards
I’ve watched a lot of Patriot games this season, and Cam Newton’s passing ability is among the worst in the NFL. Newton has missed one game this season, but he’s only thrown five TD passes. That ranks 35th in the league, with only 32 starting QBs.
According to ESPN Stats, the Patriots are one of few, if any, teams to pass more than they throw (398 rushing attempts, 338 passing attempts). Newton averages 186 YPG, and he’s going up against the second-best defense in the league tonight.
Combine the pass rush with the elite cornerbacks the Rams offer, and that equals me taking the under.
Cam Akers Under 49.5 Rushing Yards (-115)
Akers has been the Rams’ lead rusher over the last two weeks. The rookie is one of three backs that McVay uses each game, making this a risky bet. The Patriots defense allows 116 rushing yards per game, so I expect Akers, Malcolm Brown, and Darell Henderson to get touches tonight.
Akers has only gone over his rushing yard props three times this season too. Normally, I would take the over. But McVay is a smart coach, and he knows that in order to beat Belichick’s defense he will have to use everyone in his arsenal.
I will take the under for Akers.
Darrell Henderson Over 23.5 Yards Rushing (-118)
Henderson leads the team in rushing yards, and as I said earlier every Rams runningback will touch the ball tonight. He could very well lead the team in rushes tonight too.
This is an easy over for me.
