The Chicago Bears offense seems to be on track for a complete rebuild in 2021. It’s bad enough they need a new quarterback and a completely revamped offensive line. There is also an increasingly good chance they may have to go hunting for a new top wide receiver as well. Allen Robinson and the team have ceased contract extension talks. Signs continue to indicate they won’t be starting up again anytime in the future.
Let’s be honest. The 27-year old receiver isn’t dumb. He sees the state of this offense like everybody else. Why would he wish to put himself through a potential rebuild with a team that isn’t willing to give him the money he wants? He’s already wasted much of his career on bad quarterbacks. The idea of doing more of the same likely doesn’t appeal to him.
It’s for this reason many believe he will leave next year.
Would the Bears dare let that be via free agency? The logical course of action seems to be the franchise tag. If not to keep him one more year, then to at least trade him elsewhere for draft compensation. There is bound to be a handful of teams willing to part with a high pick in exchange for probably the best possession receiver in the NFL.
However, don’t forget they let Alshon Jeffery walk back in 2017. So it’s not crazy to think Ryan Pace could do it again. Then the question becomes obvious. Where would Robinson end up? Tyler Brooke of Bleacher Report has a pretty good idea. He thinks the team that could make the strongest push for him would be the Houston Texans.

“A team with a high-powered offense and a need at wide receiver could make a strong offer. The Texans might be in the market for a new weapon for Deshaun Watson after trading DeAndre Hopkins and potentially losing Will Fuller V to free agency…
…Robinson’s price tag might be high, but if the Texans can clear enough cap space, they could make finding a No. 1 receiver one of their top priorities.”

Allen Robinson to Houston would be poetic
Think about it. Robinson saw his career rebound with help from Mitch Trubisky but it didn’t end up working out. So what does he do? He goes south to join the quarterback Chicago pass on to get him in Deshaun Watson. That would be quite the kick in the nether regions for Bears fans but not exactly what one would call surprising.
Will Fuller is a free agent as well this offseason. Odds are the Texans could move on from both Kenny Stills and Brandin Cooks too. That would leave Watson without any viable weapons. Thus making a strong play for Robinson makes perfect sense. Considering how potent the star QB was with DeAndre Hopkins, it’s not hard seeing him create similar magic with A-Rob.
The truth is nobody can predict what will happen.
Allen Robinson has made it clear he’s not talking about his contract stuff anymore. He’s focused on doing his job and trying to help the Bears win. What happens from this point on will happen. Anything is possible. Perhaps a late run to the playoffs might be enough to convince him to stay in the fold. Maybe Bill Lazor calling plays could intrigue him to where he’ll give the Bears a chance to find that elusive quarterback.
Is that grasping at straws? It seems that way but this is the reality of things right now.
