Bears Mailbag -- Can The Offense Be Worse Than 2019?

In eighteen days, the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions will kick off the 2020 NFL season at Ford Field.

It’s been a wild few months, which included a completely virtual NFL Draft, a revamped offseason program, and what’s been one of the strangest QB competitions, well, ever.

Nick Foles and Mitch Trubisky have locked horns in the QB battle in “training camp”, but without any preseason games to get live action reps, Matt Nagy and the Bears’ coaching staff will have to decide a winner relatively blindly. I don’t envy those guys.

With the David Montgomery news and neither QB running away with the competition yet (though it appears Foles is winning), the offense is still a concern. But I'm not convinced it can be as bad, or worse, than last year. I expect a 4/10 offense.

The QB spot is the biggest concern on the whole team. What else is new?

I also have concerns with Eddie Goldman out for the year. That's a massive hole to plug, no pun intended.

Castillo wants Whitehair to be responsible for the offensive line. Call the protections, get people lined up, and take responsibility for missed assignments. It's just a different expectation of leadership out of his center.

No reason either player should be relegated to an area of the field. They'll both work in tandem all over the field.

Assuming Graham and Kmet are actually legit players, the Bears' offense would thrive out of 2-TE sets. The Bears should hope it's a featured personnel grouping throughout 2020.
