REPORT: David Montgomery Suffers Big Injury Scare In Practice

-

The Chicago Bears really need to get their running game on track this season after a dismal showing in 2019. Hopes rest squarely on the shoulders of second-year running back David Montgomery to make this happen. With help from better blocking up front of course. Unfortunately that goal appears to have suffered a terrifying setback.

Rumors emerged from Halas Hall on Wednesday that Montgomery went down during drills while taking a handoff from Mitch Trubisky. He was seen in serious pain and limped off the field. He was then carted to the locker room. Immediate fears were he might’ve suffered a knee injury or torn Achilles.

Thankfully it doesn’t appear to be that serious, though it could still be severe. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, Montgomery appears to have suffered a groin strain. Something head coach Matt Nagy confirmed at his press conference. The team is awaiting test results to know the severity. After that, they’ll decide on what to do next.

Bears could have a hard time replacing David Montgomery

While replacing running backs is much easier than other positions in the NFL, the Bears may have been caught in a situation of bad timing. They don’t really have much depth on their roster. Aside from Tarik Cohen, all they have are Ryan Nall and undrafted rookie Artavis Pierce. Cordarrelle Patterson is also in that mix. Not an inspiring group.

The free agent market has some notable names including Devonta Freeman, Jeremy Hill, Marshawn Lynch, and Spencer Ware. The team also worked out C.J. Prosise last week. If the injury is serious, one can imagine GM Ryan Pace will be making moves in the coming days. Finding a true bell cow this late in the offseason though? That seems unlikely. They’ll just have to use a committee approach until Montgomery can return.
