Ask around and it seems that Mitch Trubisky has control of the Chicago Bears quarterback competition through the first four practices. This is not to say Nick Foles has looked bad. He hasn’t made any glaring mistakes aside from the occasionally questionable throws. It’s just that Trubisky has looked sharper to this point.
It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. Foles came into this entire thing at a disadvantage. Normally a new quarterback has the benefit of minicamps and OTAs to knock off the rust and build a connection with receivers. He got none of those things due to the COVID-19 situation. His first training camp practice was the first time he put in any kind of work with the Bears offense.
Yet that doesn’t seem to have dampened the confidence some people have in him. Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated took it a step further from just declaring he’d be the starter. He feels it’s possible for enough things to come together that the 32-year old ends up winning league MVP.
“But what about Nick Foles? What if Foles wins the job out of camp and limps the Bears into the playoffs as a wild-card contender? The roster is certainly talented enough and Foles has an engrained relationship with Reid disciple Matt Nagy. If the Bears could navigate a difficult division and return to the playoffs, it would be hard to ignore his candidacy given that we have the 2019 season as a comparable sample.”
Nick Foles doesn’t need to be an MVP for the Bears
The reality is Foles is not focused on winning MVP. He’d be the first to say that. His job is do whatever is necessary to win football games for the Bears. If that means throwing it 40-50 times? So be it. If it means handed it off 35 times? He’ll do that too. The stats mean nothing to him. He’ll sacrifice anything and everything to ensure his team emerges victorious, be it his body or his pride.

That is a big reason why teammates love him so much.
The Bears don’t need Foles to be an MVP. They just need him or whomever is at quarterback to be good. There are enough pieces on this roster to field a Super Bowl-contending team. Good player quarterback would bring it all together.
