Morrison, a second-round pick (40th overall) of the Colorado Avalanche in 2016, did not sign with the team this summer after his four-year collegiate career.
On Tuesday morning, the Chicago Blackhawks signed 21-year-old forward Cam Morrison to a two-year, entry-level contract through the 2021-2022 season with an AAV of $925,000. In his senior season with Notre Dame, Morrison, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound left-handed shooter tallied 13 goals and 14 assists for a career-high 27 points in 37 games. Morrison was also teammates with Blackhawks defenseman Dennis Gilbert for two years at Notre Dame from 2016-18.
In four years of collegiate hockey, Morrison, an Aurora, Ontario native — the same hometown as Dylan Sikura — recorded 95 points (44G, 51) and racked up four consecutive 20-point seasons. Morrison was named to the Big 10’s All-Tournament Team and the NCAA Northeast Regional All-Tournament Team as a junior in 2018-19.
On Aug. 15, Morrison became an unrestricted free agent when he did not sign with the Colorado Avalanche. The Blackhawks had a similar situation happen with defenseman prospect Ryan Shea, a 2015 fourth-round pick, who did not sign with the team after four years at Northeastern University.
Morrison will more than likely start the 2020-21 season, his first as a professional, with the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League. The former ‘Fighting Irish’ forward plays a solid two-way game and does a lot of his damage as a net-front presence. If Morrison progresses well in Rockford next year, then he very well could become a bottom-six piece for the Blackhawks later on down the road.
