Chicago Bears Slipped A 3rd QB Into Their Recent Tryouts

-

It was revealed over the past few days that the Chicago Bears were bringing in a couple of quarterbacks for tryouts. One was undrafted rookie Mason Fine, a star at North Texas. The other was preseason legend Kyle Sloter, recently of the Detroit Lions. He has prior ties to quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo from their season together with the Vikings in 2018.

However, it turns out those two were the only quarterbacks present at what was a pretty sizable workout. A third joined the mix according to Ian Rapoport. That was Kevin Hogan. A standout at Stanford, he was a 5th round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2016. So he has ties to Bears head coach Matt Nagy. After being cut that same offseason, he spent two years with the Cleveland Browns. From there he was traded to the Washington Redskins, got waived again, and picked up by the Denver Broncos.

He failed to make the final roster in 2019 and hasn’t been with a team since. Hogan saw action in eight games during his career, completing 59% of his passes with four touchdowns and seven interceptions. Of the three QBs the Bears tried out, he’s the only one with actual playing experience.

Chicago Bears haven’t made an official move just yet

To this point, the Bears haven’t signed any of the three QBs in question. Perhaps they’re working on it right now. Or maybe the tryout was less about acquiring players and more about acquiring information. One thing teams like to do with tryouts like this is to get updated profiles on as many players as possible. See where they’re at in terms of conditioning and preparation.

Then if the time comes where they need to make a move, they’ll know which of the players they want to sign. Will they go with the experience of Hogan, the upside and connections of Sloter or the youth of Fine? That question will be answered in the coming days.
