Believe it or not, the MLB trade deadline is 20 days away. I’m not joking. As the Cubs sit atop the NL Central, it’s a fair we bring up their need for relief pitching. If Kimbrel isn’t able to bounce back this season, it leaves a rather big concern when we look at the back end of the Cubs’ bullpen. Cubs GM Jed Hoyer joined The Athletic’s podcast “Starkville” and addressed the fast-approaching trade deadline.
Jed said two things in particular I’d like to highlight:
- David Ross said it, “if there’s a trophy you want to win it.”
- He knows there will be activity.
There will be teams looking to sell
There is no doubt in my mind that Jed Hoyer believes this team can make some serious noise this season. That is why I believe the Cubs will be aggressive at the deadline. It might take a little bit but the trade market will eventually establish itself out in the following weeks. The teams that will be looking to sell might just have what the Cubs are looking for if the price is right. I understand the uncertainty that is the 2020 season but the MLB has reportedly looked at doing a ‘postseason bubble’ to help prevent issues that have plagued the MLB recently.
This might encourage more teams to explore the trade market knowing there will more than likely be playoff baseball. So if the Cubs do have a shot at another ring, you’d gotta think the Cubs would be huge players at the deadline.
