Super Bowl Champ Sees David Montgomery Going For “At Least” 1,100 Yards

-

David Montgomery is a guy who sometimes gets forgotten on this Chicago Bears offense. A bit surprising given he managed over 1,000 yards from scrimmage as a rookie and seven touchdowns. For a 3rd round pick, that is actually quite solid production. Perhaps some people can’t get over his average 3.7 yards per carry on the ground. Something that was not entirely his fault.

Anybody who watched the Bears last season saw they struggled a lot to open lanes on the ground. Some wonder if Montgomery is capable of being that feature back that Jordan Howard was. At least one man thinks so.

Michael Robinson, a former fullback who won the Super Bowl with Seattle in 2013, is a big believer in Montgomery. He feels the arrival of Nick Foles with his experience and knowledge of the offense will be just what the second-year back needs to get going.

“I’m going to go with David Montgomery, the running back out of Chicago. I know people will say, ‘Aw Mike, what are you talking about? He almost had a thousand yards last year.’ He should’ve had a lot more. Matt Nagy’s system with Mitchell Trubisky running it didn’t quite look too good. For David Montgomery he just didn’t have enough holes for him to be able to get through the line of scrimmage. And I really didn’t think Matt Nagy called the run game like he should’ve.

This year? You got Nick Foles coming to town who knows exactly how to run this offense…With Nick Foles at the helm? And I really think Nick Foles will win this position. You’re going to see at least 1100 yards out of David Montgomery.”

David Montgomery showed lots of life down the stretch

People forget that Montgomery was a big part of the Bears’ late push down the stretch last season. One that saw them almost make it to the playoffs. In four of his final five games, he averaged at least 4.3 yards per carry. Sadly, the team didn’t do a good enough job getting him the ball. The rookie had at least 15 carries in a game seven times in 2019. The Bears were 6-1 in those games. This is a big reason why people were constantly on Nagy about running the football more.

One way Foles can really help him is in the Run-Pass Option game. The Bears were dismal running out of RPOs last season. A big part of the issue was how poor Trubisky was at knowing when to hand it to Montgomery and when not to. Foles is lauded for being much better at this due to his intelligence and ability to quickly read defenses. He should create extra opportunities for the running back to produce.
