Seabrook, 35, had surgery on his right shoulder and both hips after being placed on long-term injured reserve on Dec. 26, 2019.
Chicago Blackhawks veteran defenseman Brent Seabrook isn’t used to rehabbing from serious injuries. From 2006-2019, Seabrook played in 1,013 NHL regular-season games while missing only 18 due to injury. Not to mention 123 playoff games with nearly 25 minutes per contest. A true warrior.
But Seabrook is now in uncharted territory as he recovers from major surgeries for the first time in his professional career. The three-time Stanley Cup champion sat down with NBC Sports Chicago for an interview on Wednesday to discuss his recovery process.
“I’m feeling great. I’m feeling really good, things are moving in a good direction,” Seabrook said. “I think I saw Dr. (Michael) Terry (Blackhawks’ team physician) last week, so hopefully I can get on the ice or even rollerblade now with the new world we live in, rinks not being open… I think I’ve been progressing pretty good and I’m just looking forward to getting back with the team and being able to skate as I’m sure everybody is.”
With the Blackhawks having really no option but to play Seabrook in 2020-21, it’s encouraging to hear that his recovery has gone well so far. After being such a solid piece of the Blackhawks blueline for over a decade, Seabrook posted career lows across the board in 2019-20 with just four points (3G, 1A) and 18:09 TOI in 32 games. He has four years remaining on his current contract with a $6.875 million cap hit per season.
