Danny Trevathan could’ve waited things out. He was a free agent for the first time since 2016. The Chicago Bears had just gone a disappointing 8-8. The market for inside linebackers this year is reportedly strong. Why not wait to at least see what other teams might offer? In the end, he decided to not even bother. He and the Bears reached an agreement on a new three-year deal worth a maximum of $24 million. Actually a minor pay raise from what he’d made in his previous contract.
Yet the linebacker made it clear money wasn’t the primary motivation for him at this point. Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune asked him why negotiations went so quickly which free agency close. The 29-year old had his answer ready.
Trevathan has stated his belief on multiple occasions that he feels this Bears team is capable of winning the Super Bowl. That’s not just bluster. The linebacker already has a ring, having won a title with Denver back in 2015. So when he says something like that, he means every word.

Trevathan isn’t dumb. For all the talk about the Cubs, Bulls, Blackhawks or White Sox the fact has always remained that Chicago is a Bears town. This city has been starved for a Super Bowl for the past 35 years. Finally breaking through would be a level of elation and euphoria that one cannot possibly describe. As much fun as that win in 2015 was for Trevathan, this sort of experience would top even that for him.

The Bears have the defense necessary to make a run. It’s a question of whether head coach Matt Nagy can get that offense sorted out. So much of this will depend on what happens in the next two months. Either way, Trevathan is determined to see this thing through.
