Matt Nagy was not happy with the Chicago Bears offense in general last season. However, he seemed particularly upset with how the offensive line performed. Their run blocking was atrocious and pass blocking only passable. It’s hard to win football games when you can’t control trenches. If feels like the Bears head coach felt some of the guys up front lost their edge. Could he have been talking about Charles Leno?
The left tackle was really good in 2018, posting career lows in sacks allowed and penalties committed. All that went out the window last year. Leno had 12 flags thrown on him and gave up seven sacks, tying his career-worst. This is why many are calling for the Bears to consider finding a replacement. This is easier said than done. Cutting Leno would result in just $2.8 million in cap relief with a $7.4 million dead money hit.
However, that changes if a new CBA gets ratified. In the event this happens, the league would reinstate the post-June 1st cut designation, allowing teams to spread dead money out over multiple years. In this scenario, the Bears would be able to cut Leno for $8 million in space. That might be just enough for them to move on and find a potential replacement.
One name that just became available makes a lot of sense.

Glenn can be a bridge away from Charles Leno
Glenn is a fascinating story. He was one of the best left tackles in football back in 2018. That season he finished with just five penalties and one sack allowed in 13 games. He also helped Joe Mixon average a healthy 4.9 yards per carry on the ground. It was then he suffered a concussion. One that lingered into the next season. Eventually, tension developed between him and the coaching staff over his refusal to play until symptoms had cleared up.
That coupled with the Bengals drafting Jonah Williams in the 1st round pretty much made his departure inevitable.
Glenn is 31-years old. He should have plenty of gas in the tank and is reportedly healthy. The best part from the Bears’ perspective is he should be cheaper than normal to acquire. Both free agency and the draft appear rich in tackle talent. This will lower his market value. Perfect for a cash-strapped team like them. If they’re looking for a way out of the Leno situation while saving a few precious bucks, they could do a lot worse.
