Matt Miller covers the NFL Draft for Bleacher Report and in his latest mock he predicted the Bears would take a huge swing early in the second round. He has the Bears slated to pick Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts with the 50th overall pick. He also predicted the Bears will use their coveted 43rd overall pick (from the Las Vegas Raiders) on tight end Cole Kmet out of Notre Dame.
The Bears taking a tight end with their first pick in the 2020 draft shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who follows the team. This is a position that lacked any sort of production last season. So a move like this is expected and would be welcomed by most.
The Bears shouldn’t draft Jalen Hurts
However, taking a QB this early in the draft is a decision that I honestly don’t see the front office making. There are so many other needs on this roster and utilizing such a high pick on a quarterback who is a project, to say the least — just doesn’t make sense. I’d rather the team take a shot on an edge rusher or better yet draft an offensive lineman. The idea of bringing in a veteran quarterback in FA is the correct move in my opinion. If next season doesn’t pan out, then it’s time to use a high pick on a quarterback. The good news for the Bears is they will finally have a first-round pick when the 2021 Draft rolls around this time next year.
