Matt Nagy Confirms to Media He’ll Let Trubisky Drag Him Down Too

-

Has a Coach of the Year every been fired just one season after winning the award? Matt Nagy is drawing ever closer to having to ask that question for himself. The Chicago Bears have officially reached the end of the road on their 2019 season. At 3-5 with another brutal loss, this time in Philadelphia, what was once a year with such high hopes have come crashing down. Most of the blame can be directly pointed to his offense where it ranks near the bottom of the league in both points scored and yards gained.

Neither will get a generous bump after this past Sunday what with Mitch Trubisky throwing for 125 yards on the afternoon. It was an incredible display of ineptitude that the Bears put on, especially in the first half where they gained just nine total yards in 30 minutes of football. Chicago offense has never been that good historically but this had to be a new low. Given how Trubisky was playing, many people called on Nagy to make a switch at quarterback.

As the second half began, it didn’t happen. Trubisky stayed in the game. Though he made a couple of nice throws to help put together a pair of scoring drives, it was far too late. Philadelphia held on to win 22-14. After the game, the coach was asked the big question. Would he consider making a switch after what happened? Nagy’s answer was definitive.

Matt Nagy seems content to let Trubisky drag him down too

This shouldn’t be a surprise honestly. Nagy is a family man. He believes in second chances. A guy like that isn’t going to abandon “his guy” even when it’s clear as day to everybody else that the 25-year old quarterback is hurting the offense more than helping at this point. This coach was hired to produce a good offense and at least a decent quarterback. He’s providing none of those things. Now the defense isn’t around to bail him out anymore. One must start to wonder if Nagy is capable of making tough decisions.

He’s a leader and a motivator to be sure, but it takes a lot more than that to win in the NFL. The way things are going, this could turn out to be one of the worst offensive seasons in modern Bears history. Trubisky is a major reason for that, whether Nagy likes it or not. Switch to Chase Daniel may not solve the overall offensive issues, but it will at least send a message that the kind of play he’s getting from his quarterback is unacceptable.

But hey, if he’s willing to let Trubisky continue to tarnish his reputation as a “quarterback guru,” that’s his call.
