Adam Schefter Proposed a Different Kind of Trade for the Bears

-

Chicago Bears fans are itching for a possible trade at the looming NFL deadline for help. Hopefully a quarterback who can take over for Mitch Trubisky. However, that does not seem likely. Quarterbacks are expensive and the Bears don’t have a lot of draft capital left to spend after deals for Khalil Mack, Anthony Miller, and David Montgomery in the past year-and-a-half. That does leave a counterquestion though. What about dealing a player on their roster for draft help? Adam Schefter has an idea.

Commonly when a team is without a 1st round pick like the Bears are in 2020, they’d look to try stockpiling as many selections as possible. The question is whether they have a player of value on the roster they’d be willing to part with. There are some worth speculating like Leonard Floyd, Tarik Cohen, Danny Trevathan, and Roy Robertson-Harris. None feel like true possibilities though.

Schefter had another name in mind. He appeared on “Kap & Company” with David Kaplan for ESPN 1000 to discuss the Bears’ loss to the Chargers and what they might do, if anything, at the trade deadline. It was there that the prominent NFL insider dropped an interesting name to watch.

“Kyle Shanahan knows how to use Taylor Gabriel better than anybody. They’re winning and Taylor Gabriel would be dangerous in that (49ers) offense…Okay. Taylor Gabriel. Get me back a 7 for him? A 6 for him? I’m ready to do it. I mean none of the receivers are making an impact anyway.”

Adam Schefter thinks Taylor Gabriel has value for Bears

Schefter is making it clear that the market for 2019 is clearly geared towards wide receivers. This has been the case thus far with a number of names being dealt to other teams. Most recently Mohamed Sanu to New England and Emmanuel Sanders to San Francisco. The 49ers would certainly have one of the most formidable receiving groups in the NFL if they were able to add Gabriel’s speed alongside Sanders and Marquise Goodwin. So the basis of the trade makes sense.

San Francisco has two 5th round picks as well, so sacrificing their 6th rounder to get Gabriel would hardly hurt them much at all. From the Bears’ perspective, it would push them up to eight picks total for 2020 and also free up an additional $6.5 million of cap space. Money they can put to good use shoring up other more pressing positions or even pursuing help at quarterback. It’s an interesting scenario but ultimately one that doesn’t feel likely at this point.
