There may be quarterbacks who are currently better than Mitch Trubisky on the field. At least one hopes for the time being. However, the young Chicago Bears signal caller may already be one of the best there is off the field. One of the things that so often gets overlooked about great quarterbacks is how they carry themselves around the fans. Whether it’s doing the simple things like holding football camps or signing autographs.
Team chairman George McCaskey is excited about where Trubisky is going as a player. At the same time, he’s already convinced the Bears found the right guy in terms of who they want to represent the franchise. He explained down at the owners meetings in Arizona to Adam Jahns that it’s the little things about the QB that make him special. The fact he’s willing to go the extra miles that a lot of others wouldn’t do.
“I’ve seen him a couple times in training camp … there was once in Bourbonnais where it was ‘win the sweepstakes’ or whatever and get your picture taken with Mitchell Trubisky. Mitchell knew he could give the kid something more and he said why don’t you go out for a pass? I’ll throw you a pass. Well the kid drops the first one and he says, ‘Go out for another one.’ So he made sure that the kid caught a pass. Just a little thing like that.
“And then I saw him more than once at the Walter Payton Center — kid comes in and says, ‘Will you please sign my jersey?’ And a lot of guys would just scribble something and go on to the next thing. And Mitchell said, ‘Well, OK, where do you want it? Do you want it on the front or the back?’ Because he knew that the kid would treasure that memento and he wanted to make sure that he did the way that the kid would want it to be if he had it for quite some time. Like I said, he gets it.”
Mitch Trubisky will be a god in Chicago if he excels on the field
Simply playing good football would be enough for Bears fans to love Trubisky. This city has been starved for a good quarterback. Too many times they’ve been teased by brief instances of success. Jay Cutler, Erik Kramer, and Jim McMahon all started strong but ultimately disappointed. Not since Sid Luckman has a player been able to string great seasons together at that position.
Trubisky is coming off a Pro Bowl alternate nod. Not to mention the most efficient passing season of the Super Bowl era in team history. The best part his potential reaches so much higher than that. All signs indicate his comfort in the offense has drastically grown. His confidence is through the roof. If he turns it on this year? Combined with the off-the-field reputation, the guy will be Chicago sports royalty before too long.
