After the White Sox 10-3 loss in the finale of the New York Yankees series, the White Sox are calling up Zack Collins from Triple-A Charlotte. Collins is an offense first catcher with some serious pop and on-base skills. He will strike out plenty but should walk 100+ times each year and has the power to hit 25+ home runs. Defensively, he has some polishing to do but the White Sox think he has what it takes to stick behind the plate longterm.
On the year in AAA, Collins is slashing .258/.382/.497 with 9 home runs and 38 RBI in 48 games played.
A corresponding move will soon be made. There’s no reason to have 3 catchers on the 25-man roster so it could mean the end for Welington Castillo. Or maybe the White Sox will choose to DFA Yonder Alonso and use Collins as a DH/catcher. Whatever the case may be, this is an exciting time for Sox fans. The first big call up of 2019 has been made (not counting Eloy since he started the year here). Next up should be Dylan Cease with Robert/Madrigal not too far behind.
It’s all starting to come together and fans can start to see what the team will look like next year. Let’s go.
