The White Sox have been playing above .500 baseball for a month, but they continue to deal with injuries to their starting rotation. Lucas Giolito missed a few weeks with a hamstring injury and Carlos Rodon will miss the rest of the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Now, another starter is going on the injured list, as lefty Manny Bañuelos was officially placed on the 10-day IL prior to Friday’s game against the Blue Jays.
Righty Jose Ruiz has been called up and will be in the bullpen for the White Sox.
Bañuelos left during Tuesday’s start after experiencing soreness in his throwing shoulder. He’s made five starts for the White Sox this season, but the last three were ugly for the lefty, giving up 19 earned runs in 11 innings.
Now, the White Sox have a spot open in their rotation and as cool as Bañuelos’ comeback to the majors was, his injury might open the door for another intriguing journey back to MLB for Ross Detwiler.
Detwiler, 33, was playing in independent ball last week and after signing with the Charlotte Knights, he looks like a reasonable option to make a couple spot starts for the White Sox.
Of course, we all want to see Dylan Cease and he is lined up to start when Bañuelos’ spot comes up against Houston, but at this point there’s no indication that the White Sox will call him up.
But again, who ever thought the White Sox would sign Eloy Jimenez to a record-breaking contract before the start of 2019?
Sooo, keep your fingers crossed for Cease!
