Earlier this afternoon, Patrick Kane, Alex DeBrincat, and the rest of Team USA took on Team Great Britain in a preliminary matchup at the IIHF Men’s World Championships. Both Kane and DeBrincat performed extremely well, but Kane’s outing, in particular, was record-breaking. ‘Captain America’ came into the afternoon tied with Mark Johnson as the United States all-time leader in Men’s World Championship points with 33. Kane was able to surpass Johnson by recording a goal and two assists en route to a 6-3 victory.
After the three-point performance from Kane, he now has 13 goals and 23 assists in just 21 games for the United States. In comparison, it took Mark Johnson 62 World Championship games to become the U.S. all-time leading scorer. All three times that Kane has represented the United States during the Men’s Worlds, he has been exceptionally dominant. In fairness, the Buffalo, New York native usually dominates his competition, no matter what level he’s playing in.
Last year as captain of the United States, Kane was named MVP after recording a tournament-high 20 points (8G, 12A) in 10 games. He also led Team USA to a bronze medal by defeating rival Team Canada 4-1. Kane managed to pick up the primary assist on Nick Bonino’s game-winning goal in the third-place game.
While Patrick Kane and the United States are off to a strong start to this year’s tournament (Kane has 2G, 4A in four games and the U.S. is 3-1), there is still a lot of work to be done before the Quarterfinals begin on Thursday, May 23rd. Team USA’s three remaining preliminary games are against Denmark (5/18), Germany (5/19), and Canada (5/21).
