The Chicago Bears drafted David Montgomery, a running back out of Iowa State after trading up in the 3rd round with the New England Patriots. They moved from #87 overall to #73 in a deal that saw them surrender their 5th round pick in 2019 and a 4th round pick in 2020.
Montgomery ran for over 2,300 yards and 24 touchdowns his final two years at Iowa State. Lance Zierlein of NFL.com had him ranked as the second-best running back in the draft, comparing him to former Kansas City Chiefs Pro Bowler Kareem Hunt. This of course makes the interest obvious as Matt Nagy coached Hunt in 2017.
“One of the safest runners in this draft with a desirable combination of size, vision, toughness and creativity. He runs with impressive calm and instincts in the midst of interior mayhem, weaving and battering his way through traffic. Smart teams will recognize his ability to create yardage for himself with his eyes, footwork, contact balance and power.”
Chicago Bears draft David Montgomery and got a potential stud
While nobody would call Montgomery a budding superstar, the fact is he showed a ton of potential for a program that isn’t prone to having a lot of football standouts. The fact he produced and produced a ton for Iowa State should say a lot about his talent. The kid has strength, balance, sneaky speed, and the toughness to handle a heavy workload.
Suffice to say the Bears added another playmaker to their offense. Combined with Tarik Cohen and Mike Davis, they have a litany of options. Don’t be surprised if Montgomery ends up shouldering the load by the second half of the season though. He’s a good football player and history shows Ryan Pace doesn’t trade up for scrubs.

He even got a 6th round pick back in the trade. So the Bears will still have five picks in this draft.
