The Mitch Trubisky Era Ends With A Colossal Thud In Atlanta

Matt Nagy finally reached his last straw. Yes, the Chicago Bears started the season 2-0 and Mitch Trubisky was part of that. Yet record never tells the full story. The fourth-year quarterbacks had some bursts of good but also a lot of bad. The first three quarters in Detroit. Then the second half against New York. Granted some of the miscues weren’t his fault but things finally reached the boiling point for Nagy in Atlanta.

Despite playing a badly depleted Atlanta Falcons defense in a stadium with no crowd noise, Trubisky regained his old form from 2019. He ran the full gambit from missing wide open deep throws, taking bad sacks, not running when he should, and getting fooled by disguised coverages way too often. Following an ugly interception in the 3rd quarter, the breaking point was reached.

Nagy pulled Trubisky from the game and put in Nick Foles. It was not injury-related in any way. So this was clearly a decision based on play. It’s hard not to feel like this is the end of an era for another disappointing Bears quarterback. It would be a surprise if Foles is not the starter moving forward.

Mitch Trubisky is who he is and what he is isn’t enough

Did the Bears make the decision too soon? One could argue that. Then again, it’s not like Trubisky was showing them anything truly different. There were some signs of improvement the first two weeks, but then he delivers a dud against a bad defense. Is Foles that much better? People will argue that. Still, after four years it’s clear to this Bears team that they’ve seen the best of what Trubisky is.

They’d rather take their chances on a veteran who won a Super Bowl in Foles and hope he might have some old magic still in him. The only way Trubisky gets back into the game moving forward is if Foles gets hurt. One thing is for sure. This puts the future of both Nagy and GM Ryan Pace squarely in question.

Not to mention what the Bears’ future plans are at quarterback.
