Nick Foles Needed Less Than a Half To End The Trubisky Era

Matt Nagy had a tough decision to make. The offense was floundering. The defense was struggling to stop Atlanta. His Chicago Bears desperately needed a spark. So he did what nobody thought he’d have the courage to do. At least not this early in the season. He looked to the bench and went with Nick Foles.

Mitch Trubisky didn’t have the worst stat line in the world, but that didn’t tell the whole story. He was terrible for most of that game, and against one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL. There was no excuse for him to be playing so poorly. Nagy couldn’t take it anymore. Foles couldn’t possibly be worse.

He definitely was. It didn’t start great. The veteran came dangerously close to a couple of interceptions early and actually had one picked in the end zone. However, that wasn’t his fault as Allen Robinson had his hands on it first before (again) having it taken away.

After that, things got crazy. Foles began to find open receivers. Before anybody could blink, the Bears scored twice to narrow the gap from 26-10 to 26-23. Facing 3rd and 8 from the 28-yard line, he could’ve easily settled for a field goal to tie it. Foles showed that’s not the way he thinks.

Nick Foles may not be a star but he’s what the Bears missed

People can talk about Foles never living up to his full potential. The reality is he has a Super Bowl ring and when given a good system and weapons, he’ll make things happen. That was the case in this wild comeback. This 30-26 win saw him go for 188 yards, 3 touchdowns, and an interception. All in less than a full half.

He may not be a Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson but he’s a smart, efficient, and gutty quarterback. He knows where to go with the football and isn’t afraid to take calculated risks. He’s what the Bears have sorely lacked under center. Now the job is his and the team can move forward at 3-0.
