Mitch Trubisky had few allies outside of the locker room coming into this year. The national media were particularly ruthless. They lambasted the Chicago Bears for even considering the idea of giving him another chance to start. Calls that continue even two weeks into the season as Cam Newton enjoys success out in New England.

Most of it is because they’re all convinced Trubisky is a lost cause. He’s never going to live up to his status as a #2 overall pick. Why continue the charade? The lead NFL analyst for Pro Football Focus though thinks he’s starting to see why the Bears took this gamble. Based on what he’s seen thus far, the light might just be going on for the 26-year old.

“Through two weeks, Trubisky has played at a level we haven’t seen from him in a long time. He earned an 80.2 PFF grade against the Giants, his best single-game grade since Week 12 of the 2018 season.

All of a sudden, Trubisky was the one being let down by his teammates — not the other way around. He completed 64.3% of his passes, but he had two key passes dropped, both on third down, and one of which would have been an absolute dime of a touchdown.”

Mitch Trubisky getting props from him is a big deal

Keep this in mind. Monson is anything but a Trubisky fan. Quite the opposite in fact. He’s almost made it his personal mission to jab at the Bears quarterback constantly over the past couple of years. There’s plenty of evidence.

So for this guy to step back and admit Trubisky has improved? It’s significant. He’s not lying either. The guy has shown improvement. Granted he still has consistency issues and isn’t always throwing with conviction which leads to being late on throws or not having good accuracy. However, he’s made better decisions more regularly and is off to the best start of any season in his career.

He has five touchdowns to two interceptions. If not for a bad drop by one receiver and another having the ball stolen? It could easily be six and one respectively. He has a passer rating of 92.7 through two weeks, a significant improvement from last year. There is a lot of work left to do, but it’s a promising start.
