Mitch Trubisky is off to a decent start in 2020. He has a 92.7 passer rating with five touchdown passes and just two interception. It hasn’t always been pretty but his 4th quarter in Detroit and first half against the Giants offer some hope that he might be figuring some things out. Then again, there are still plenty of skeptics.

Former Chicago Bears defensive end Alex Brown is one of them. He’s been an outspoken critic of Trubisky for some time now. He’s watched every game as an analyst for NBC Sports Chicago going back to when the quarterback was drafted in 2017. That along with his own experience playing in the NFL make his opinion one worth listening to.

Brown was asked point blank on the Under Center Podcast by JJ Stankevitz. Is there anything he’s seen to this point that gives him confidence Trubisky can both keep his job and be an effective quarterback?

“Absolutely nothing. Absolutely nothing. I’m dead serious…From what I’ve seen? I don’t change like the wind and I think a lot of fans change like the wind. I don’t. I see one game he played well or one half he played well? I’m not ready to give him $100 million. No, I need to see consistency and through everything I’ve seen, the whole body of work, yeah no he’s not the guy.”

Mitch Trubisky has sunk to an unflattering role

Harsh words indeed. Brown wasn’t done though. He believes Trubisky will never be a guy that can carry an offense on his back. Those hopes are long dead. The best chance the Bears have is to relegate him to the role of game manager. Something another notable QB did well enough 14 years ago.

“Mitch can play in the NFL. He just has to play a role like what Rex played. He can’t be the 35-40 throws a game guy. He can’t do that and I don’t think Coach Nagy going to change. If those things hold true? Then Mitch isn’t your guy.”

Yes. It’s true. Brown believes Trubisky can’t do much better than be what Rex Grossman was for the Bears back in the mid-2000s. A guy who leans on the running game and defense while hitting occasional big plays off play action. A team like this one can win with that, but pay him $90-100 million? No way.

It doesn’t sound like the ex-defender is going to change his mind so easily. Trubisky has 14 games left to try. Otherwise the Bears have some big decisions to make next offseason.
