The offensive story coming out of the New York Giants game will be Mitch Trubisky and his tale of two halves. Not to mention the odd disappearances of Anthony Miller and Allen Robinson. That said, people need to take proper notice of David Montgomery. Not only is he off to a career start thus far for the Chicago Bears. He also might be proving himself as one of the toughest players in the NFL.

Let’s rewind. Less than two weeks before opening day, Montgomery suffers a nasty-looking groin injury in practice. People fear he will miss 2-4 weeks with a strain and likely not suit up for the Lions in Detroit. Then he returns to practice like nothing happened the next week and delivers 64 yards on 13 carries.

Fast forward a week and he topped himself. Montgomery endured a scary moment against New York when he tried to hurdle over a diving defender. He got upended and landed squarely on the top of his head. It was a frightening moment. The running back was taken to the locker room and declared to have a neck injury.

David Montgomery then shrugged it off

Under normal circumstances, Montgomery probably would’ve been declared out. Instead, the kid strolled back onto the sideline and went right back to work like nothing happened. He finished the afternoon with 82 yards on 16 carries. Good for 5.1 yards per carry. This in addition to the sweet 28-yard touchdown catch and run he had in the first half. It’s clear now. Montgomery is not human. He’s a cyborg.

This is just the sort of guy Chicago loves. Not flashy. Not whining about every little thing. He’s blue collar to the core. A guy who goes to work and does his job, even if he’s in pain sometimes. Remember this is a kid who idolizes Walter Payton. A guy who missed just one game in his NFL career. Seeing him shrug off injuries like this pays homage to Sweetness.
