The Chicago Bears had instant question marks in the middle of their defensive line after Eddie Goldman opted out of playing in 2020. Filling that void has proven difficult for the team since then. Bilal Nichols and veteran John Jenkins have done what they can to help keep the run defense strong but it’s apparent the interior run-stuffing isn’t anywhere close to what it was last season.

It appears GM Ryan Pace has decided to find help. His solution is longtime Pittsburgh Steelers backup Daniel McCullers. The giant 6’7, 350 lbs defensive tackle has played in 73 games for them dating back to 2014. In that time he’s amassed 41 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Based on initial impressions? This is a depth move.

McCullers is a giant body and has flashed potential over the year but never really managed to take the next step. Perhaps the Bears feel respected defensive line coach Jay Rodgers can work a little magic with him. It wouldn’t be the first time.

An intriguing move if nothing else. Credit to NFL Draft Diamonds for breaking the news.

Chicago Bears may like McCullers for his size alone

Human beings aren’t generally built that big. McCullers is not just over 350 lbs but being 6’7 means he also has length. His problem over the years has been inconsistent. He’ll flash some really nice plays in one game and then become invisible the next. This is why Pittsburgh never decided to pull the trigger on making him a starter. The talent was there but the polish and motor never showed up.

Rodgers though is not new to such challenges. His work with Nick Williams last year is a perfect example. A longtime journeyman who failed to latch on anywhere joins the Bears and ends up with six sacks last season. If Rodgers can’t get something out of McCullers, nobody can. It isn’t hard to see why the Bears are taking the chance.
