It’s amazing how much information continues to come out on Mitch Trubisky and the 2017 draft even three years later. It remains one of the pivotal moments in Chicago Bears history. The time GM Ryan Pace ignored the doubters and hitched his wagon to an athletic kid from Ohio with tons of physical potential but also a lot of question marks. Most of them surrounding his scant amount of experience.

However, it appears those weren’t the only reservations they had. Remember a few weeks ago when it was revealed by Spear Training Center that Trubisky suffered from a “structurally imbalanced” throwing shoulder. It’s believed this issue has contributed to the QB’s constant issues with accuracy and lack of touch.

Believe it or not, this isn’t the first the NFL has heard of it. Jon Greenberg of The Athletic was discussing the Bears quarterback competition between Trubisky and Nick Foles. That’s when he brought up an interesting conversation he had with the scout of another team last year. Turns out they noticed the shoulder issue even before the guy was drafted.

“As one scout explained to me last season in the Halas Hall press box, his team marked down Trubisky in the draft because of a “tight shoulder” release. They still graded him as a second-rounder, but they weren’t sure he could make all the throws in the scant time allotted to an NFL quarterback. Some decision-makers weren’t ready to stake their reputation on him. Pace was willing and look at what happened.”

Mitch Trubisky is proof how the little things can decide a QB career

It’s amazing to think about. By all rights, Trubisky should be a success in the NFL. He’s athletic, a leader, works hard, and appears composed in late-game situations. Yet he remains a major disappointment because he lacks just a couple of key features. Namely the quick processor to dissect defenses before the snap and minor physical conditions that lead to major consequences.

Namely a shoulder that can’t produce the quick, fluid release to get throws out on time and on target. At least not consistently enough to matter against NFL defense. Perhaps the work he put in this offseason helped solve that issue. We won’t know until the actual games get played in September and Trubisky may not even be the starter.

Just another reminder the Bears fell in love with the person of Mitch Trubisky. Not the quarterback.
