Looking over the Chicago Bears wide receiver depth chart, it’s fairly easy to pick out the first four guys who are locks to make the final 53. Allen Robinson leads the way with Anthony Miller right behind him. Then there’s Cordarrelle Patterson with his versatile skillset. The fourth has to be Ted Ginn Jr., the consummate veteran who brings much-needed speed to the equation. After that, it gets a bit more difficult. By the sound of things, Riley Ridley is making some noise after a quiet first year and rookie Darnell Mooney has fans amongst the coaching staff. That leads to the obvious question. What about Javon Wims?

Hopes were so high for the former 7th round pick out of George last year. His strong preseason in 2018 and nice flashes across his brief appearances as a rookie gave one belief he might turn into something more. It didn’t happen. Despite many times the offensive snaps in 2019, Wims managed just 186 yards and a touchdown.

It wasn’t for lack of targets either. He saw 39 passes thrown his way. The problem is he caught just 18 of them. For all his size, he just wasn’t consistently open enough. If people weren’t sure where he stood going into training camp this year, receivers coach Mike Furrey cleared things up.

Javon Wims is putting in the work but he needs results

For fringe guys like Wims, this offseason couldn’t have come at a worse time. No minicamps and no OTAs are bad enough. Yet the lack of preseason games means it will be even harder for him to convince coaches that he deserves another shot at the main roster. Every route must be crisp and every pass that is catchable must be caught. Any drop or stumble will be more scrutinized than ever before.

This is the reality of the NFL. Being a former 7th round pick, there are only so many chances a person gets. One could argue Wims has had more than his fair share. This camp will be his last stand. If he can’t deliver now, then he won’t ever. It should be an interesting month.
