Chicago Bears Are Flying In A New QB and He’s Got Game

The Chicago Bears haven’t added a rookie quarterback to their roster in years. Not since drafting Mitch Trubisky. Could that drought finally come to an end? This writer has pleaded with the team to take a look at a young QB by the name of Mason Fine. He was a standout at North Texas, throwing for over 12,000 yards with 93 touchdowns and just 34 interceptions.

It was a legitimate shock that he failed to land on a team during the initial wave of undrafted free agent signings.

At last, the NFL lifted their restrictions on teams being able to bring players in for tryouts. The Bears certainly didn’t waste time. According to his former high school coach, they are flying the quarterback up to Chicago to get a look at him. Given the COVID-19 situation and how critical depth is at every position, it wouldn’t be a shock if they end up making a deal.

Chicago Bears must work around Fine’s weaknesses

Being from a smaller school isn’t the reason Fine was not drafted. He’s got a strong enough arm and is also quite mobile, able to create with his legs. The problem that NFL teams had with him was his size. Plain and simple. At 5’9, he is tiny by the standards of NFL quarterbacks. Pockets tends to swallow him up and that led to persistent issues with happy feet.

The best comparison to make here is he’s a poor man’s version of Russell Wilson. Not quite the athlete and not quite the arm and a bit shorter. However, the kid is a gamer who pulled his team out of the fire several times across four years. He will probably start out as a practice squad guy who can work his way onto the main roster.

Beyond that? His talent is enough to start on Sundays, but only if he has a coach who can work around his obvious weaknesses.
