The Chicago Bears knew the risks of COVID-19 might compel some of their players to opt out of playing in 2020. Already several around the league are doing just that. Now that list includes their star nose tackle Eddie Goldman. While nobody can fault the 26-year old for his decision given his history of asthma, it opens a gigantic void in the middle of their defense.

GM Ryan Pace now must decide what to do next. Will he see if somebody already on the roster can take over like John Jenkins? Or will he look to the free agent market for help? Most would assume the latter is most likely. Depth at nose tackle is razor-thin now and not being able to stop the run would diffuse the ferocious pass rush the team put together this offseason.

Eddie Goldman is not replaceable but loss isn’t a killer

The good news is the NFL is a passing league first. In that context, the Bears remain stacked with a loaded pass rush and an athletic and opportunistic secondary. Goldman was the guy who plugged gaps against the run and kept offensive linemen off the inside linebackers. Is there anybody on the market who can do that? Yes. A few names stand out.

Damon Harrison

Subscribe to the BFR podcast and ride shotgun with Dave and Ficky as they break down Bears football like nobody else.

When it comes to plugging holes and stopping the run, Harrison has been one of the best in the NFL for a considerable period of time. The man known as “Snacks” eats up space and is almost impossible to move. That is what the Bears are looking for. His time in Detroit did not go so well but a lot of that can be chalked up to his lack of desire to play there. He has family questions to consider, but if he commits to playing then a chance to be in the middle of that front seven would undoubtedly appeal to him.

Xavier Williams

An ankle injury robbed Williams of most of the 2019 season, which is a shame. He was starting to play really well over the course 2018 for the Kansas City Chiefs. He shows the ability to hold his ground at the point of attack and take on double teams. His return last season for the playoffs was timely as he helped the Chiefs hold both the Texans and Titans under 100 yards rushing in each of their victories. Understand that he is not on Goldman’s level, but he would be serviceable.

Sylvester Williams

The former 1st round pick was a key part of the 2015 Denver Broncos defense that dominated on their way to a Super Bowl title. Though known best for their pass rush, his presence in the middle really helped out their run defense. Since leaving in 2017, he’s bounced around the league with various teams. Nobody would say the 31-year old is anything special at this point but it’s possible he can fill that specific role again for one season.
