The Chicago Bears had a tough decision to make this offseason. It involved who they should keep at inside linebacker. Do they stick with longtime starter Danny Trevathan who is approaching his 30s? Or do they go with the young gun Nick Kwiatkoski who played the best football of his career down the stretch of last season? In the end, the Bears decided to stick with Trevathan. Kwiatkoski, though disappointed, didn’t wait long to find his new home. He signed a three-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Couldn’t happen to a better guy. Well-deserved. However, the offseason hasn’t gone as he or anybody planned. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the NFL to cancel both minicamps and OTAs. Players have stayed home for months. This led to a major concern among teams. How many guys would be able to keep themselves in top shape without access to team facilities? Head coach Matt Nagy himself voiced such a worry multiple times.

Based on a recent Instagram post, it looks like Kwiatkoski may have run into such a problem. Or at least the photo makes it look that way. The linebacker was out boating with his girlfriend, ex-teammate Mitch Trubisky and his girlfriend. At first glance, it appears Kwiatkoski hasn’t been hitting weights often enough.

Nick Kwiatkoski either just has that body type or has gotten lazy

This could all be a simple misunderstanding. That just might be the type of body Kwiatkoski has. On the other hand, he may have gotten out of his workout routine due to the COVID situation. Maybe he’s enjoying the extended offseason a bit too much. Especially after securing that lucrative new contract. It’s hard to tell. One hopes that isn’t the case. It wouldn’t be the best first impression to make on his new team.

Hopefully, it’s just a trick of the photograph. Otherwise, the Bears’ decision to pass on keeping him is already looking pretty smart. Training camp is set to begin on July 28th. Odds are there will be rumblings on the Raiders beat if something is amiss.
