Hey, remember when Daniel Descalso was the biggest free agent signing by the Cubs entering the 2019 season? Hilariously sad times. Well, after blowing out his ankle and being a worse hitter than Jon Lester last season, the Cubs are pretty much done with the veteran infielder.

The team made its 30-man roster official a day before Opening Day and with it came a few moves on the 40-man roster. The Cubs added catcher Josh Phegley and left-handed reliever Rex Brothers to the active roster, which meant two players needed to be kicked off the 40-man roster.

It could have been easy for the Cubs to simply waive Descalso, you know like firing him basically and get rid of him that way, but instead they placed him on the 45-day injured list. Meanwhile, Robel Garcia was DFA’d to make room for the other 40-man roster spot.

The other official roster moves include Jose Quintana starting the season on the 10-day injured list after cutting his thumb washing dishes before summer camp began and outfielder Mark Zagunis opting out of the 2020 season. He was at the team’s second training site in South Bend. With Zagunis opting out, the Cubs have another spot open for their 60-man player pool.

The Cubs Opening Day roster consists of 11 relievers, 5 starting pitchers and 14 position players.
