Are the Chicago Bears done making moves? Probably. Not because they don’t want to. It’s likely more because they have no definite idea of what the financial situation could look like for them and the NFL moving forward. COVID-19 has put a stop to most transactions for the time being. At least until the league and NFLPA work out how to navigate that issue. This hasn’t stopped speculation about what the Bears should do. Recently it was stated they need to give a look to veteran safety Morgan Burnett.

Most Bears fans will remember him during his time with the Green Bay Packers. Since then he’s spent time in stops with the Steelers and Browns. Nobody would accuse him of being the greatest playmaker in the world. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report though believes he fills a very specific niche that fits something the Bears are lacking. Namely the need for a pure strong safety.

“Adding veteran safety Morgan Burnett would give Chicago a proven, if perhaps underwhelming, option at safety.

While Burnett isn’t the most versatile defensive back in the game, he’s a physical and productive box safety with plenty of playing experience. The Georgia Tech product has appeared in 121 NFL games with the Green Bay Packers, Pittsburgh Steelers and Browns.

Adding Burnett would give the Bears a seasoned starter and one with experience playing in the NFC North to boot—though he last suited up for Green Bay in 2017.”

Burnett fits that role but do the Chicago Bears want him?

If this were 2016 Burnett, the move would make all the sense in the world. He had 93 tackles and three sacks that year. The guy was a constant presence around the line of scrimmage. However, since 2017 he’s had a lot of trouble staying healthy. His final year in Green Bay it was a groin issue. Then in 2018 with Pittsburgh it was groin and back problems. Last year with Cleveland he tore his Achilles after eight games.

There is no question he’d make a nice natural fit next to Eddie Jackson. However, the Bears have said all offseason that the best ability they want is availability. Can they count on Burnett making it through a full 16 games at 31-years old? Not given his recent track record. This is why they’re more comfortable with a mix of Tashaun Gipson and Deon Bush.
