Mitch Trubisky can never be chastised for his work ethic. The guy has fully embraced his responsibility as a leader since he joined the Chicago Bears. He’s often the first guy into the building and the last guy out. He knows one of his duties as the quarterback is to set an example for the rest of the team. However, this unusual offseason with the COVID-19 pandemic has made it harder for him to do that.

With the Bears facility still closed to the players, practicing and working out has become an individual effort. This is why many league experts fear a lot of players will end up arriving at training camp out of shape. Trubisky, for his part, is doing what he can to curb that possibility. One way is by organizing regular throwing sessions with various offensive teammates.

The trick is finding a way to get them to respond to his summons. One would think a group text would do the trick. The quarterback shot that idea down fast at his recent press conference. He learned a far more effective tactic.

“That’s the key. Don’t do group texts because then everyone doesn’t reply. You got to do it individually so each person feels like you’re talking only to them.”

Mitch Trubisky never gets credit for his leadership

People always talk about Trubisky the player on the field. They rarely stop to evaluate how he is as a leader. This is a reminder that the guy is actually taking that part of his job seriously. A lot of quarterbacks wouldn’t have noticed subtle things like that in regards to his teammates. The devil is in the details. It’s getting desired results too. Allen Robinson, David Montgomery, Tarik Cohen, Cole Kmet, Demetrius Harris, and several others have answered his summons to this point.

That might explain why he feels so confident going into his battle with Nick Foles. He can do this sort of thing while the newest Bears QB is stuck in Florida.

“I think that advantage goes to me just because I’ve been the starter here the last two years. These are my guys, my teammates and guys I’ve built super strong relationships over the last two years.”

If nothing else, it’s nice to see the rest of the Bears offense still responding to him so well. A surefire sign he hasn’t lost their faith that he can still be the guy to get them to where they want to go.
