The Chicago Bears seem content with most of the moves they’ve made to improve their roster. They were fairly aggressive in doing so. Trading for Nick Foles. Signing Robert Quinn to a massive deal. All told there are 39 new faces on the roster looking towards training camp. A far cry from the status quo type of offseason they had a year ago. Head coach Matt Nagy and GM Ryan Pace are ready to do what it takes to get back into the playoffs.

Have they done enough though? There is no way to know for sure but some lingering question marks do remain. In regards to the defense, some have concerns regarding their depth at outside linebacker. The addition of Quinn was excellent, but it’s important to remember he has a history of health issues. That makes the #3 spot at the position fairly important. Right now it’s going to be filled by either 5th round pick Trevis Gipson or former 1st round bust Barkevious Mingo. Not ideal.

This is likely why Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report urged Nagy to lure in a familiar face.

“Chicago released edge-rusher Leonard Floyd and signed Robert Quinn to pair with Mack. As a duo, they should revitalize the Bears pass rush, but if either battles injuries or performs below optimal levels under Pagano, the front seven will need a third rotational pocket-pusher.

Aside from the 2017 campaign, Vinny Curry has made a living as a situational playmaker off the edge, and he’s recorded 29.5 sacks and 43 tackles for loss in his career.

As offensive assistants for the Philadelphia Eagles, head coach Matt Nagy and John DeFilippo saw what Curry can do with limited snaps, as the 31-year-old has the motor to cause constant disruption behind the line of scrimmage. He can beat Barkevious Mingo for primary duties behind Mack and Quinn.”

Matt Nagy is a great recruiter but price matters with Curry

Vinny Curry never got much credit but the defensive end was a major part of the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl run in 2017. His sack numbers never told the full story of how good he was at harassing quarterbacks. Last season he delivered five sacks with 18 pressures overall. For a rotational pass rusher, those are solid numbers. So the idea of putting him behind Quinn and Khalil Mack has merit.

The issue comes down to price. At 31-years old and with it being late June already, the odds are he can be had for cheap. From there it comes down to scheme fit. Curry spent most of his NFL career as an end in a 4-3 defense. However, he has logged time as a 3-4 linebacker. In fact his best season in 2014 when he had nine sacks was when the Eagles ran a 3-4 under head coach Chip Kelly.

So the idea is sound enough. Whether the Bears feel the need to do this is another story. They seem high on Gipson as a rookie, having traded up to get him. Why limit his chance to get better by stealing snaps from him by signing Curry? Then again, things could change quickly when training camp begins.
